Groups Pressure FDA To Allow Aspartame In Milk…”For The Children”

Not only is it likely that the FDA will approve of adding aspartame to milk; they’ll say it just grand for it to be done without labeling it or notifying consumers…

Natural News – “You probably already know that the FDA has declared war on raw milk and even helped fund and coordinate armed government raids against raw milk farmers and distributors. Yes, it’s insane. This brand of tyranny is unique to the USA and isn’t even conducted in China, North Korea or Cuba.

Only in the USA are raw milk farmers treated like terrorists.

But now the situation is getting even more insane than you could have imagined: the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) and the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) have filed a petition with the FDA asking the FDA to alter the definition of “milk” to secretly include chemical sweeteners such as aspartame and sucralose.

Importantly, none of these additives need to be listed on the label. They will simply be swept under the definition of “milk,” so that when a company lists “milk” on the label, it automatically includes aspartame or sucralose. And if you’re trying to avoid aspartame, you’ll have no way of doing so because it won’t be listed on the label.

This isn’t only for milk, either: It’s also for yogurt, cream, sour cream, eggnog, whipping cream and a total of 17 products, all of which are listed in the petition at FDA.gov.

As the petition states:

IDFA and NMPF request their proposed amendments to the milk standard of identity to allow optional characterizing flavoring ingredients used in milk (e.g., chocolate flavoring added to milk) to be sweetened with any safe and suitable sweetener — including non-nutritive sweeteners such as aspartame.

This is all being done to “save the children,” we’re told, because the use of aspartame in milk products would reduce calories.

Milk industry specifically asks to HIDE aspartame from consumers

Astonishingly, the dairy industry is engaged in extreme doublespeak logic and actually arguing that aspartame should be hidden from consumers by not listing it on the label. Here’s what the petition says:

IDFA and NMPF argue that nutrient content claims such as “reduced calorie” are not attractive to children, and maintain that consumers can more easily identify the overall nutritional value of milk products that are flavored with non-nutritive sweeteners if the labels do not include such claims. Further, the petitioners assert that consumers do not recognize milk — including flavored milk — as necessarily containing sugar. Accordingly, the petitioners state that milk flavored with non-nutritive sweeteners should be labeled as milk without further claims so that consumers can “more easily identify its overall nutritional value.”

In other words, hiding aspartame from consumers by not including it on the label actually helps consumers, according to the IDFA and NMPF!

I am highly allergic to aspartame. It gives me migraines. This afflicts other people too. Aspartame is fattening and causes other severe health problems too. The FDA is stupid, like any other food organization. Case in point, the horrid travesty in Europe with the horse meat. So who else knows what else they are secretly putting in without out knowledge?

    • The FDA is just outright owned by corporations at this point. To think they have anything at all to do with determining safety is a joke, isn’t it? I’ve been reading, researching and learning so much about our food supply lately…none is good and I don’t trust any label anymore. Yuck. And double yuck…to ALL of this mess!!

Only a fool could expect better from an FDA headed by Michael Taylor – the same sort of fool that voted for Obama.

  4. This is frightening and so disturbing. Especially given the research that points to the correlation between artificial sweeteners and obesity and type 2 diabetes: http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/story/2013/02/15/artificial-sweetners-diet-nutrition.html

    • It is disturbing, isn’t it? Truly, I do not understand why ANYTHING is added to milk? Is it not good enough as it is? I personally hate the taste and never drink it but my kids sure do and I would not want them drinking aspartame-laced milk. And since it will not only be milk but can be any dairy product, this could be a real health-nightmare within a short time.

Hmm, this article considerably misrepresents the petition and the FDAs role in it. Not that I approve of the petetion’s proposal – I think it should be summarily rejected – but the petition, and the FDA’s notes, tell quite a different story, and can be read in full here: https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2013/02/20/2013-03835/flavored-milk-petition-to-amend-the-standard-of-identity-for-milk-and-17-additional-dairy-products

    • Thanks so much for the extra information! Much appreciated.

    • The only thing I see misleading in the article after reading the link, was my lead-in/intro line which I have altered. Nothing else seems to misrepresent what the intentions of the petition are here. The FDA is about protecting corporate/big business interests and I have little doubt that this will be approved as requested and public safety be damned. Ugh.

  6. I drank raw milk my grandfather’s cows, from a local dairy, and from other sources, often as a kid. No problems. Loved the stuff. This is absolutely outrageous.

Hmmm, my daughter is deathly allergic to Aspartame her tongue and her throat swell up and she has difficulty breathing.
Are they prepared in their infinite wisdom to be brought u on charges for deceptive labeling ?
That is if we even have a legal right to protect ourselves anymore ?
They have to label foods for other allergies like peanuts , soy even MSG , but not Aspartame? WTH?

    • I’m sure that big pharma can come up with *cure* or vaccine for the aspartame allergy, right? No, I honestly don’t think we have the right to protect ourselves because The Corpo-State wants to do it for us. What recourse is there, really? Expensive lawsuits that will land on the bench of some corporate in-house lawyer turned judge?

I don’t think the DC agencies were quite so corrupt when the peanut allergy issue was raised, were they? I do vaguely recall a time when angry consumers could stand up and make something of a difference by vocalizing their concerns. Nowadays it doesn’t seem to make a damn be of difference what we say or do…

Truly frightening. Why the he’ll would any one want to put aspartame in milk? Calories? What kind of bull ssh it is this? Let’s see, aspartame changes into glutamate increases neurological stimulants even causes seizures.. are they going to add MSG to enhance the flavor too?

    • It baffles me as well. The more I learn about our food industry in general, the more I realize that everything we thought we knew about consumer protection is just wrong – not only wrong, downright DANGEROUS. As for what else could be added for flavor enhancement…MSG could end up being the most pleasant additive used. *Shudders*

  10. sharechair says:

What happens to people like myself who are highly allergic to aspartame? geezzzzz

    • No milk for you, then! Unless of course you happen to live in a state where raw milk is still legal – and assuming you like the taste of raw milk. I think everyone is allergic to aspartame – it’s only a matter of how quickly the side-effects appear. No one can really ingest this and remain unharmed, can they?

  11. theINFP says:

Surely milk doesn’t need to be sweetened? Or is this the only to get children to drink it? I think not!

    • I’ve known plenty of kids who enjoy plain ol’ raw milk so no, I don’t believe that artificial sweeteners are the only way to make kids like the stuff. Insane, isn’t it?? And scary, too!

  12. roymcdade says:

Why should the govt be concerned about aspartmate. like Fluoride it ONLY slowly kills you..And now they have approved Anthrax testing on OUR CHILDREN, the Most Sacred part of the evolution of mankind, why would they let a little sweetener bother them…..
