1,500 colonies of honeybees, from a community in Hopelchen, Campeche, died this February 6 from the fumigation of Monsanto’s GMO’s in a nearby area.
Yucatan Times – “This has directly impacted more than 50 impoverished families, who recently suffered a poor corn crop due to drought. The community was relying on their sale of organic honey to compensate for the lack of maize. The current honey left by the bees is also lost due to the contamination of pesticides and transgenic pollen.
Alvaro Mena, a mayan farmer from Hopelchen and member of the Network in Defense of Maize, estimated losses at nearly 10 million pesos and is the equivalent of one year’s worth of corn and honey production for the community.
Fumigation has intensified where GM crops have been planted in Mexico. GMO’s are known to be resistant to pesticides and are planted in large monocultures, applying huge amounts of Roundup. It is no accident says Mena: it is the toxic onslaught that comes with GM crops and the threat of allowing millions of acres of GM Maize to be planted.
Mena attended the debate at which officials failed to attend and began with his witness of GMO’s. Thousands showed up to participate in the debate on GM maize on Thursday, February 7, in a packed auditorium of the Faculty of Science, organized by several networks, including #YoSoy132 Environmental Via Campesina Popular Urban Movement, and the Network in Defense of Maize…
…At the debate, the convening organizations, including urban, rural and students expressed their critical views on GMOs from their perspectives. They manifested their intent to stop the planting of GM maize and will continue through all struggles and will do all that they can to not allow the government to impose, against the interests of the vast majority of the population, GM Maize for the benefit of Government and a few multinationals. They agreed to promote further discussions, forums and activities, and strengthen the links between the organizations to avoid GM foods and crops. Also they will promote the widest possible participation in the pre-hearings on Corn and Food Sovereignty of the Permanent Peoples Tribunal, which among other topics will hold a pre-hearing of scientific evidence on GM and failures and corruption of the biosecurity system in the country…” Full Story on Yucatan Times

In man’s disregard, we have become our own threat to our existence. What a shame that nature had to pay the price for our disrespect and ultimate demise. A link to this post will be published on our facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/TheAnimalSpirits

Thanks so much for sharing such a sad story – I hope more than anything that it will help more people to wake up and see the harm we cause. More people need to realize there is no benevolent force working to solve the *problem* of global hunger and that there is only a force working to ensure control of all things natural.
As more individuals being to accept responsibility and act to raise public awareness, change is occuring, but soooo late and so much work to be done. Let’s keep on tirelessly informing the public, and asking them to inform others. Politics, government and the ridiculous mainstream media are not doing the job. The indivuals of the international community MUST do it. I think we do it best by raising public awareness, actively pursuing work that supports the solution, NOT supporting big corporations, and voting with our pocketbooks by refusing to support those who are irresponsibly destroying our planet. I also feel strongly that we can generate economical growth by establishing business that further the protection of the planet, . . . investing our money/time into buying local, organic, non-gmo . . . by refusing to support the meat and dairy industries . . . and by forming and supporting private business and non-profit organizations.

Yes, yes and YES! We MUST stop waiting on external forces to change things – the power does still reside with ‘the people’ but it seems most have forgotten how much power they have and as well as how to use it effectively. Nothing to do but keep trying to remind them..!

Too few people understand the importance of bees and how catastrophic the problem without them.
I keep reading about all of these *neat* new ways we are finding that will allow us to live without bees…robotic bees? Hand pollination? Seems like too much of a high stakes gamble for me…why can’t we just learn to respect our bees and coexist with them as they are???
My opinion is that Big Corps like Montsano and their hybrid farming is putting something into the plants, like pesticides. that are killing them off..I have stopped eating any forms of sugar or artificial sweeteners years ago… Now I am reading how the US is is being bombarded with BOGUS honey from China… Not even REAL honey, and the govt will be charging some Importers for crimes… I buy my honey from Costco, and you can BE SURE I will get to the bottom…
I caught the bogus honey scandal story a few days ago and it made my blood boil. We are lucky to have one excellent source of local honey and it is all we will use now. Part for safety concerns and partly because Mesquite blossoms + Bees = the BEST tasting honey!
I don’t think any of this ‘bee situation’ is accidental…it is a push to force control of all of our foods into the hands of corporations. We may have heirloom seeds stored but if the new breed of robotic bees they are creating are programmed to only feed from GM blooms…we’re still screwed, aren’t we? Hand pollination works but enough to sustain the planet…? I don’t think so…
Correct… Most every plant uses bees to pollinate and without bees we won’t even have flowers…
Let’s eat paper money for food post-bees.
It takes a special rare skill to turn these things around.
*conjures the skilled. *
Mmmmm….baked Greenback pie…full of non-nutrients & ink…yum! >.<
It takes a special kinda person with a special kind of experience to connect the dots.
I imagine even Monsanto peeps don’t want to imagine their kids smiles in anticipation of All America Greenback Pie. It’s just a matter of serendipity and shifting storytelling magic. You do good!
Everyone gets los in the woods sometimes and does really stupid shet like not worry about the birds and the bees cuz food and monitizing is sooooo important.
I do this on a small scale in my own life!
Imagine how a corporation could lose itself.
For them to come back, it’a always good to have a smiling welcoming party.
It helps the bees and us survive and thrive.
Keep up the amazing paying attention that you do.
You keep me mindful and I like it.
Hugs!
