This is my latest project – a blog partnership with my husband as we return to prison advocacy volunteer work and try to raise public awareness about the cost, dangers and alarmingly expanded use of solitary confinement as a form of rehabilitative punishment.
“The SHU” “The Hole” “Control Units” “Isolation Cells”…”HELL”…”Deprivation Chambers”…”Mind Destroyers”…”Madness Makers”…

We blog about some general prison issues but our primary goal is to raise awareness about all aspects of solitary confinement in prisons and the detrimental effects it has on the human mind, body and spirit. Thanks to my husband, Steve, for jumping right in with help & support! ♥

I hope you enjoy it!
Oh my goodness…thank you SO much!
You made my day a really happy one – thanks again!
this is such a needed discussion on this subject. Look forward to reading more.
I know from my firsthand dealings with prisoners in Super-Max units that the use of extended solitary can absolutely destroy someone mentally until there is nothing left of the person they once were. From an outsider’s point of view, it was horrible to watch their handwriting and drawings…then their ability to write clearly…all just deteriorate into complete scrawling gibberish. Knowing they were slipping into a place where the letters were almost just manic, demonic…pathetic. We – society – have no just cause for inflicting that sort of long-term damage on humans.
And for the record; I am far from a bleeding heart – I believe that punishment should be swift and match the crime. And THAT is the heart of the issue of sensory deprivation in the course of punishment/rehabilitation…it is doled out when it is NOT fitting and often, it is carried out when there has been NO crime committed whatsoever. If nothing else, people should resent the waste of their tax-dollars…
so correct.
