…Flock together in New Mexico.
Below is a small slide-show I put together using several photos of our native New Mexican birds. Many pics were taken at the feeders in my yard; it is amazing what a bit of water and seed can do out here in the desert! Roadrunners generally do not associate with other birds as they are considered to be predators…yet, for several months, we had a Runner that came to visit every day and he got along quite well with the Mourning Dove, Sparrows, Quail and Robins that were also daily visitors at our watering hole.
Other photos were taken during our various camping trips up in the Gila Wilderness…it is a treat to get to hang out with the birds that don’t visit us down here in the flatlands… like the Blue Jays & Nuthatches. It’s also a joy to watch the Turkey Vultures, ducks, wild geese and even a hawk or two in flight…unfortunately I am much better at watching than I am at getting good photos of the action…my brain freezes and I forget to click when I should…ah well, it’s all fun in the end.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy the show of our fine desert flying friends!

thank you for putting this together
So that is where my feathered friends go in the winter
That road runner was pretty neat, I’ve never seen one! I have 22 pairs of mourning doves around here, that I can count! Love their ‘song’. The other night the dogs were barking at something up in a tree I figured it was a raccoon but, still went to get a flashlight. It was a little owl, just about 8 inches tall. I don’t know if it was a baby or just a small owl. Cutest little thing. Last night I dreamt I found a hummingbird’s nest with 2 babies in it. It was pretty funny, since I’ve never seen a baby hummingbird…lol!! Love your slide show!
Yep, I steal all of your pretty birds and keep them at my house, didn’t ya know? The runners are cool but do be fooled by the cartoon version…they hiss, they don’t *Beep!* Do you have the smaller Inca Dove up there as well? They are more bashful than the Mournings but oh gosh are they sweet! Owls are something we hardly ever see anymore…have to be more on the outskirts of town; I would FLIP if I got to see baby owls! Not much chance of finding the hummybird nests here…they tend to build in the middle of ferocious cacti and unless you are crawling around the desert on your knees (because ya know, THAT is just too much fun!), you’ll pass the nests without ever seeing them.
Stunning!!! So glad you decided to publish! Love the sound effects & the slide show. Creates a feeling of being there for the viewer. So many standouts, where to start? All the raptor photos, especially the hawk in the tree at the end, the roadrunner photos, the Canadian Geese in flight, the eagle in flight, the quail. Just gorgeous! You must keep clicking & thank you for posting!
What? They don’t beep? Lol! We don’t have the Inca Dove that I know of. When I ran my duck farm I would see (or hear) owls quite often b/c at night they would swoop down and devour the babies. Netting was soon needed on top of the pens for that! Some of those owls were huge, so I think I really did see a baby…so cute! When I was hunting this past season, I seen a white owl that was also hunting, he was about 3 feet tall!!! I watched him for about a half hour before he took flight….that is the thing I like about hunting…being with nature
I found a very teeny tiny nest here and saved it. I always wondered if it’s a hummingbird’s nest. It fits in the palm of my hand!
The last owl I caught a glimpse of was on the edge of our place when we lived on the very outer edge of town – that bad boy had a wing span of over 2ft and the *whooosh whooosh* when he lit off was incredible. Wish I could see more of them…and I’d love to have some ducks, too…hrm…oh yeah wait, duck bait would be cruel and having ducks is one of those ideas that makes hubby look constipated!
I love any time I can spend out in the woods but unfortunately, we have to drive a couple hundred miles to get to the woods. The desert just doesn’t do much for me; maybe I’m just sick of seeing it after a lifetime?! I really would love to live somewhere that had more trees, more flowers and more wild critters. Call me crazy but it’s hard to warm up to the likes of scorpions, tarantulas and millipedes which we have in abundance here! Ick. >.<
