This is not new. I worked for a printing company in Miami who did just the same thing back in the 1990′s. In fact, Miami, Florida has been taking advantage of this opportunity. You’d be surprised–maybe not–how many ideas begin in Florida.

Correction: Miami has been taking advantage of this opportunity for a long time.

I’ll probably end up in jail … do you think they will partner up with an inmante with a ph.d in education? I know this sounds sarcastic, but it is a very real possibility.

  4. I know it isn’t something that isn’t new but it does still seem to be something that the majority of Americans aren’t really aware of. Considering that one of the biggest private prison corporations is based in FL, I’m not surprise that Miami has taken advantage of it.

Just to clarify myself here – I don’t want people to think I’m saying prisoners should not work or contribute to their own maintenance but I’d rather see their work time being spent maintaining prisons, growing food, etc., than to be used as cheap labor for the private sector.

And if you should end up in jail (I sincerely hope you don’t!) I’m sure there is always a need for educated and capable trustees…

You were very clear the first time. My point: If it is happening here, it means it is just a matter of time for this to spread. What I saw: Abuse of the prison workers as well as demeaning and belittling tactics. They were paid lower than the minimum wage. They stood out and were made known that they were walking on egg shells. That’s just a little slice of the pie. About going to jail: My principles I hold firm.

    • And it will keep on spreading and spreading as prisons/prison industry keeps growing. Of the prisoners I worked with over the past several years, none objected to working…all objected to working for UNICOR due to the horrible conditions and practices. At one point prisoners were being used to smash about PC’s and remove parts for resale..that the work was toxic and there were no safety masks….oh who cares? They’re *Just* prisoners after all! >.<
Kudos for holding to your principles…we need more of that in the world right now.
