The Fuck-It Point; When Is Enough…Enough?

The video below is a short and very powerful film about the darker side of life inside that which we call ‘civilization’. I wonder how we can consider ourselves civilized when our lives are so permeated with death, violence & destruction? Is it civilized to stomp out any and all life forms that happen to either provide something we need or stand in the way of the things we want?

Are we truly enlightened beings if we are willing to obliterate any culture or way of life that is not the same as ours? I don’t think we really are. We say we have ‘advanced’ as a species but is this REALLY true? Would beings who have truly advanced be willing to live inside a bubble that enslaves them? Enslaves others?

Most importantly, would advanced and knowledgeable beings continue to build, live inside of and participate in a system that guarantees their own destruction and the destruction of their entire life support? Doesn’t it seem odd that this is exactly what we do? We act more like spoiled children – taking, taking, taking and throwing temper tantrums & lashing out at anyone who dares to take our toys – than any kind of being with enlightened or advanced way of thinking/acting. What are we going to do when we’ve not only broken all of the ‘toys’ but completely obliterated the toy factory as well?

While I don’t believe in climate change the way it is being sold to us right now, to deny that we are not doing irrevocable damage to every part of this earth is both naive and dangerous. Just as we cannot cure our diseases with medicines that cause even more illness and disease, we cannot continue to mend the damage of technology and machines by creating still more machines and technology.  Spraying pollutants into the sky which interfere with our weather patterns in the name of saving us from ‘climate change’ (re: changing weather patterns) is insanity, pure and simple. And yet, that is exactly what we do

So when will enough be enough?

Would you defend your children from harm? If so, then isn’t preventing them from living on a destroyed and desolate planet filled with hunger and hardship, defending them from harm?

What lengths would you be willing to go to in order to preserve ALL life and leave it intact for future generations?

Have YOU reached your Fuck-It Point?

When I reach the Fuck-It point, I’m going Galt

I prefer to make our own Galt’s Gulch and live within the system that leaves the smallest footprint to our children’s children to have to deal with.

Many people have to live paycheck to paycheck and feel they have little effect on our current direction. If we low and middle class make just one effort a day to make a difference. Buy one less meaningless item, shop for items that require less resources or are replenish-able. Think before you buy and make a difference each day and leave this world a better place for your kids and their kids.

    • I understand what you are trying to say but it is not enough. We cannot get out of this by simply “less”. Sooner or later we have to stand up and overthrow the system…not just use less of it.

  4. Before we overthrow anything we need to have a workable alternative lined up to take it’s place or disaster will strike. I’m yet to meet anyone I would consider fit and capable of achieving that and reinforcing it if it came to be.

    • We had workable alternatives in the past…we just didn’t recognize what they were and steam-rolled over some of them. ;-) I do understand your point about not tearing down one system without a workable system to replace it with…can you imagine the chaos of millions of people waking up suddenly without hospitals or other services they rely on? Who’s to say though that Mother Earth may not allow for us to have such luxury as installing a new system before the one we have gets forcibly torn out from under us? I hope we have time to choose an alternative before we have no choices and have to scramble to make do with what is left of the ruins of our societies.

This plain and simple should not be called a documentary. There is not enough evidence backing up the claims made and sweeping generalizations are made left and right, especially in the beginning. While I agree with the overall sentiment that the way we live is not sustainable, to me this seems to be purely someone’s opinion peppered with more fallacies than I have ever heard in my life in one concentrated block. For example, it talks about how the big turn in history “may have been” during scarce times when people began to domesticate wild beings and this being how people began viewing everything as resources to be used (10:28). Different places and peoples began domesticating animals at different times, are you suggesting every culture developed the same way? What evidence suggests from that that we began to see things as resources considering that life and culture 10,000 years can still be argued over and interpreted in different ways? From this very oversimplified (and likely wrong) statement, the documentary then goes into how we went into war and poverty to the ‘ecocide’ of today. This is less than 30 seconds of the documentary too.

This gets slightly better when you get farther in, but it’s still not enough as fallacies are consistently rampant throughout. It touches on some interesting topics occasionally, then undermines its own credibility with oversimplification and generalizations, which is actually a shame.

I understand this is also being used as a call to action, but I highly doubt everything is going to collapse at the same time as this seems to imply at points. Economic hardship (eg: gas making it too expensive to drive anywhere) will likely drive research and ingenuity into more economically sustainable practices such as oil alternatives. The whole problem is way too complex for a solution to be ‘Fuck it, let’s start over.’

  6. I don’t recall referring to it as a documentary – I called it a short film. I never made any claims that everything stated in it was right; I expect people to come to their own conclusions as to the validity of ANYTHING and/or EVERYTHING I might post and am not about to waste my time breaking everything down in ABC fashion for people. I posted this because I thought it was thought-provoking, period. I think we humans are on a collision course with a hell of our own making and am curious as to what, if anything, we might be able to do to reverse course. I do appreciate you pointing out weaknesses in it but hope you understand why I did not. It’s up to each individual to decide what they make of it and likewise, it’s up to people to do their own research on just about everything posted on the intrawebs.
